Indian Highway, London

Artist's note

My video and photographs are about real locations and industrial objects, but also about my attempt to find firm ground. There is confusion between what was and what will be. It seems that all rooted notions are now floating and in contradiction. Democracy/patronage, unity/stratification, heritage/gloss, city/caste, nation-state/ communalism, future/violence, development/dissent, state/terror, nothing is what it purports to be. I find myself located in this interstice, ambivalent about the euphoria of new capital. My work becomes the anchor for finding a sense of self in the floating morass. ‘Indian Highway’, too, is exploring the new route of this uncertain, indefinable journey.
